![]() photo by Sam Holland See the Wade Hampton Statue at the U.S. Capitol. The General Wade Hampton statue is dedicated to the first Governor of South Carolina after Reconstruction. Hampton served as Governor from 1876-1879 and was called the "Saviour of South Carolina" for leading the state out of the hardships and terrors of the Reconstruction decade. The bronze statue, located on the North side of the Wade Hampton office building in the Capitol Complex, is 15 feet tall and 17 feet long and was sculpted by Frederick W. Ruckstull. The inscription reads as follows: Erected by the State of South Carolina and its citizens to Wade Hampton |
