General Richardson Monument

The inscription on this beautiful monument reads:
This Mall is named in honor of Richard Richardson 1704-1780. Brigadier General of militia in the American Revolution, member of the first and second Provincial Congress, Commander of the 1775 Snow Campaign, and ancestor of six Governors of South Carolina. He was taken prisoner by the British in 1780 and became mortally ill while in captivity. Main Street in Columbia was first named Richardson Street. When this portion of Main Street was closed to create a mall, the General Assembly voted to restore its original name.
