Pierce Mason Butler (1798-1847) Governor of South Carolina and Colonel of the Palmetto Regiment in the Mexican War |

Pierce Mason Butler was born on April 11, 1798. He as educated at Moses Waddel's Academy
in Abbeville, SC. Butler was a banker by profession. He served as a Captain in the United
States Army and as a Lieutenant Colonel in the South Carolina Militia.
Butler also served as US Agent to the Cherokee and Comanche Indians. Butler served
as Governor of South Carolina from 1836 to 1838. As Governor, Butler appointed a
commission to survey South Carolina's public schools in an
effort to find areas of possible improvement. Butler died on December 22, 1846 in
the Mexican War at the Battle of Churubusco. He is buried in Edgefield, SC. | ||
