Angus Patterson (1790-1854)

President of the South Carolina Senate

Angus Patterson was born on December 5, 1790 near Lumberton, North Carolina. He lived in Barnwell and had a law practice with William D. Martin.

Patterson was elected to the House and served there from 1818-1821. Then he served in the Senate from 1822-1849.

On December 8, 1838, he was elected President of the Senate for the remainder of the 33rd General Assembly. He continued to serve as the President of the Senate until 1849. Patterson suffered from consumption, which forced him to retire.

Patterson married Hannah Frizzell Trotti and they had eleven children. He died on May 26, 1854 and is buried in Barnwell.
